Responsible tourism expert Harold Goodwin has joined the Travel Foundations as a trustee, following unanimous approval from the board, the organisation aims to promote sustainable travel.

Goodwin is Professor of Responsible Tourism at Manchester Metropolitan University and a Director of the International Centre for Responsible Tourism, which he founded in 2002. He is also an advisor to the World Travel Market on Responsible Tourism and involved in several industry related committees, including being chair of the judges for the annual World Responsible Tourism Awards.

Goodwin commented, “I’m pleased to have been asked to join the Board of Trustees at the Travel Foundation, and feel that it’s the right time to join forces. Led by Salli, the Foundation’s shift in strategy fits with the direction of my work – putting destinations into the spotlight. I look forward to the challenge of working with the charity to quantify its impacts.”

The Travel Foundation was founded in 2003 as an independent charity working with the travel sector to build a sustainable future. The organisation sets up projects in tourism destinations that find, test and demonstrate new ways for travel organisations to make a difference, from excursions that provide economic opportunities for local people to making locally produced goods available to holidaymakers and tourism businesses.

These projects are then turned into practical tools, training and business support to encourage travel companies to adopt responsible business practices.

Noel Josephides, chair of trustees, said, “We’re pleased to welcome Harold as a trustee. Harold’s background in education and research, among many other things, will add a new dimension to the board.

“He’s worked in destinations with local communities, governments and the industry to apply theoretical knowledge, which marries with the Travel Foundation’s practical nature. The Foundation’s new strategy focuses on destinations and collaboration, and Harold will certainly add value in these areas.”
