With just one sleep until the big day, Blue & Green Tomorrow is encouraging readers to think about donating even a small amount over the festive period to one of the many children’s charities doing exceptional work. Today, it’s the NSPCC.

The London Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was established 1884 just as social attitudes were changing. Within five years, the organisation had 32 branches throughout England, Wales and Scotland. Over the years it has become the recognisable NSPCC it is today.

In 129 years, the charity is helped more than 10 million children in the UK. The NSPCC lists creating a pioneering online counselling service, the creation of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and gathering public support for its FULL STOP campaign among its achievements.

Whilst our society is radically different to when the charity was set up, the NSPCC continues to work for the protection of children and regularly updates its campaigns and support to reflect demand and need.

Current campaigns include SaferNet, the Underwear Rule, ‘don’t wait until you’re certain’ and ‘all babies count’. The charity notes that the average child will receive £178 worth of presents from their parents this Christmas, but it can cost as little as £10 to give an abused child the chance of a safer life.

This year’s Christmas appeal advert states, “For many beaten, abused and neglected children Christmas won’t be so merry this year.”
