Deepwater Horizon disaster: two years on

Two years ago today, 20m gallons of oil from 4.9m barrels spilled into the Gulf of Mexico following an explosion at BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig. Humanity is still counting the cost.

It was an environmental disaster that truly highlighted the dangers of our unhealthy addiction to oil and gas, and the very real risks of extracting it from inaccessible and fragile locations.

In other news, the oil giant is still official Olympic Sustainability Partner. But two wrongs don’t make a right, do they?
