UK doubles global water pledge
The UK will double the scope of its global water, sanitation and hygiene education, so that it now reaches out to some 60 million people worldwide.
The commitment was revealed by international development secretary Andrew Mitchell at a meeting in Washington last week.
“The UK commitment represents a significant boost in tackling the international water and sanitation crisis which currently results in a staggering 2.5 million people dying every year from diarrhoea and other diseases caused by a lack of access to these basic services“, said Barbara Frost, chief executive of WaterAid.
“We call on the other donors and governments to follow the UK’s lead and redouble their efforts to achieve sanitation and water for all.”
The pledge comes after Blue & Green Tomorrow highlighted the importance of water investment as part of World Water Day last month.
