Sustainability institute of the week: Institute for Sustainability Solutions Research

Published

on

The Institute for Sustainability Solutions Research (ISSR) was launched in 2012 and brings together the world-class sustainability research carried out at Plymouth University.

The institute has over 420 members, including over 300 researchers investigating sustainability from a variety of different disciplines and perspectives including science, business, and health. It acts as a hub for the researchers and offers practical, tailor made support to the research centres, groups and individuals.

This support varies depending on need, but includes help locating sources of funding and building partnerships with industry, government civil bodies and other organisations to facilitate interdisciplinary research and collaboration. Due to the promotion of collaboration, the institute aims to promote cutting edge partnerships and encourage students to engage with researchers.

The organisation notes that sustainability compromises of three key dimensions of economy, environment and society, which always overlap. Subjects recently researched at the ISSR include the sustainability of container shipping, the waste problem in the NHS and the embedding of sustainability and climate change into health education and practice.
