Meet the Blue & Green Tomorrow team: Jemma Collins
With Sustainable September drawing closer, we thought we’d open a window into the world of Blue & Green Tomorrow.
Journalist Jemma Collins tells us about her background, interest in sustainability and what the future might hold.
Tell us briefly about your background and your current role.
I have always been interested in journalism and I even created my own magazine in primary school and sold it to all my classmates! I studied journalism at the University of Lincoln in 2008 and graduated with a 2:1 in 2011. Before I started my internship at Blue & Green Tomorrow I was working at Alive Conference Centre in Lincoln helping to manage all external bookings.
My internship began at the start of June this year and I have been writing articles and getting interviews for the last few weeks whilst trying to learn the ropes!
Where does your interest in sustainability come from?
I have always been interested in ethical and sustainable practices and going to Alive church in Lincoln has encouraged me in this, especially as I enjoy being involved with the some of their charity work. Every time I learn more about all the innovation taking place in the sustainable sector I feel so inspired and see how sustainability really is the way forward.
What’s your favourite sustainability story at the moment?
I really love reading about groups like Triodos, an ethical bank with over 5,000 investors who all have the same goal of helping others and the planet. I was really blown away with how much good work this company are doing and how many people are so committed to good causes.
What one idea do you think could change the world for the better?
I think it’s just the idea that whatever your contribution you can make a difference. It sounds cheesy but it’s not about what you do, it’s simply the will to do it. This is shown every day by people who want to make a change in a place that seems impossible but just go for it and industries have been revolutionised!
What do you see of the future in terms of sustainability, business and the environment?
I really believe sustainability is a growing trend, which customers are getting on board with and soon companies will have to start seriously looking into their environmental impact or they will be left behind. I think the issue of the way we run businesses is changing, customers no longer want cheap, unethical solutions but want to be a part of something that matters.
