With your Florida vacation only days away, you can already hear the ocean waves and feel the warm sun on your skin. This trip is an opportunity to relax, rejuvenate and enjoy all of the treasures this state has to offer. Whether you plan to experience Florida’s Gulf Coast or kick back in the Keys, you’re ready to soak in every moment of your trip.

Before you jet off to the Sunshine State, it’s important to pack accordingly. By having the right clothes and other items in your suitcase, you can prepare for any activity, invitation, or event that comes your way. The following are some basic guidelines to help you pack effectively.

Do: plan for your adventures

While you might not have every moment of your trip planned, it’s helpful to have a general idea of what activities you want to enjoy. This way, you can pack for specific types of activities. For example, if you plan to hike and explore the coast during your vacation, pack plenty of outdoor clothing. However, if you’re opting for a beach vacation, you can leave the hiking boots at home and pack mostly swim and casual wear. With this packing method, you can prepare for activities and events while omitting clothing that you don’t need.

Don’t: overpack dressy clothing

Locals and tourists alike generally stick to a casual style in Florida, so you won’t need to dress to the nines for your vacation. Dressy clothing can also take up excess space in your suitcase, so it’s best to minimize what you bring for formal occasions. By packing one or two evening wear outfits, you will be ready for upscale dinners and other events.

You might consider bringing a loose cocktail or slip dress, as well as a pair of strappy heels or wedges. Dress pants, a long or short sleeved button down shirt, and a lightweight blazer can also work well. If you don’t have anything in your closet that pairs coastal style and formal wear, consider purchasing a few options from online boutiques.

Do: prepare for rain

Florida is named the Sunshine State for a reason, but rain will sneak up on you during certain parts of the year. The rainy season generally runs from June through September, but you could experience a shower any time. To get ready for rain, bring a light rain jacket and some waterproof shoes. You may consider packing an umbrella or buying one when you arrive. If you plan to enjoy mostly outdoor activities, bring quick-drying clothing and additional rain protection.

Don’t: forget sun protection

No matter the season, the Florida sun can burn your skin. This is why sun protection is always a must. Pack sunscreen, a sun hat, and sunglasses to keep with you at all times. While you’re out and about during the day, it helps to have light, protective layers on hand. If you are traveling with children, make sure that they each have a hat and a pair of sunglasses in their suitcases, and that they understand why they need to wear them.

Do: bring versatile accessories

By packing a few accessories that pair well with all of your outfits, you can add flare to your vacation style without overdoing it. For a breezy beach look, bring a stylish cover up or a wide-brimmed hat. A nice pair of earrings and a simple bracelet can dress up a casual outfit for dinner. It’s also important to bring one beach bag and a functional day bag to safely hold all of your belongings. If you plan to visit a theme park with your family or spend your days hiking, you might want to bring a functional backpack.

By being proactive and planning for your Florida vacation, you can fill your suitcase with functional, stylish items that help you fully enjoy your vacation. And when you don’t need to worry about what you are wearing, you can fully enjoy every moment of this adventurous or restful getaway. Your memories here are sure to last a lifetime.
