Landis+Gyr wins £600m deal to install British Gas smart meters
Landis+Gyr is set to supply the majority of the 16 million smart meters British Gas will install in its customer homes. The £600m deal is the largest of its kind worldwide and sets a “new industry standard”, according to the company.
As a result of the announcement, Landis+Gyr expects to double its 600-strong UK workforce and extend its manufacturing facilities to meet the demands of British Gas’s rollout and its other UK customers. British Gas has already announced more than 1,000 roles for energy smart experts.
Chris Weston, managing director of British Gas, said, “Smart meters herald a new era for energy customers, bringing a transformation in the way they can manage energy use in their homes and businesses.”
By 2020, smart meters will be rolled out as standard to homes and businesses across the UK as part of a government initiative. The new meters will replace current gas and electricity meters, putting an end to estimated bills.
The average UK customer is expected to save around 5% (£65) each year when they switch meters.
During the summer, Energy UK launched guidelines to advise and protect customers who use smart meters. The code of practice dictates the minimum standards that suppliers must follow when installing the meters and insists they offer customers energy efficiency advice.
