Green energy company Triodos Renewables has expanded its renewable energy portfolio with the acquisition of a 55% stake in a Cambridgeshire wind farm.

The five-turbine Boardinghouse wind farm, near March on the Isle of Ely, is expected to generate 30 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity per year. This adds up to roughly the average annual needs of 6,300 homes.

“We grew our renewable energy generation capacity by 40% in 2013 and generated record levels of green energy. We enter 2014 confident and excited about what lies on the horizon”, said managing director Matthew Clayton.

“We are delighted to be putting our community of shareholder’s investment to work helping to build the UK’s renewable energy capacity.”

Leading renewable energy specialist EcoGen, which developed the project, will own the remaining 45% of the project along with its landowner partners.

Triodos Renewables, a subsidiary of Triodos Bank’s investment arm with over 5,000 shareholders, now holds stakes in 12 wind farms.

When operational, the Cambridgeshire project will take the firm’s total energy generation capacity to 59 megawatts (MW).

Originally founded in response to the Chernobyl disaster, Triodos Renewables appeals to investors who want to use their money in the fight against climate change.
