Plans to build a new wind turbine production and installation facility in Hull have received approval from Hull City Council’s Planning Committee.

In March, Siemens and the Associated British Ports (ABP) announced a joint investment of £310 million in the project. The firms have said that the project will create 1,000 direct jobs, along with hundreds more during the construction phase.

The site will be located at Alexandra Dock, Green Port Hull, and will include construction, assembly and service facilities along with a new rotor blade manufacturing facility in nearby Paull, in East Riding. Construction at Alexandra Dock is expected to commence later this year with planning applications for the Paull blade site being submitted later in 2014.

Finbarr Dowling, Siemens project director for Hull, said, “We are delighted that the plans for Alexandra Dock have been approved by Hull City Council. These works represent an important step in the overall programme, which will be progressed in coming months and years.

“Many people have worked exceptionally hard to get the project to this stage and we are grateful for this commitment and the support of the people of Hull. We will continue to work closely together with our partners and stakeholders to ensure that we continue to make good progress in the delivery timeline.”

Dowling added, “This is a key project for the region, for the UK wind industry and for the UK in helping to deliver the future low carbon economy.”

The UK continues to be a leader in the wind industry, and particularly the offshore sector. However, reform and uncertainty has seen the UK slip down the ranking when it comes to renewable investment, according to an index from EY.
