It’s time the energy industry got ethical

Ed Gill, head of external affairs at Good Energy, describes why the firm’s ethical approach is a winner on many fronts.

Energy companies are currently suffering from a lack of trust. With recent headlines about doorstep mis-selling and questionable tax policies, suppliers’ practices have been thrown under the spotlight, leaving many customers feeling frustrated.

According to communications firm Edelman, just 38% of UK consumers believe energy companies will do the right thing. At Good Energy, our business was founded on the principles of being open and transparent so when we found out we’d topped Ethical Consumer’s survey of green electricity tariffs and achieved its highest score for our dual fuel gas tariff, we couldn’t have been happier.

It gives customers confidence that we’re an ethical business and gives us affirmation that we are achieving the high standards that we hold ourselves to.

Rob Harrison, co-editor of Ethical Consumer, said, “Good Energy has consistently come out top in every green energy product guide that Ethical Consumer has ever published. This is because of Good Energy’s pioneering approach to renewable energy and their whole company ethos which is based around tackling climate change, the biggest environmental challenge of our age.”

Ethical Consumer gives each tariff an ‘ethiscore’ out of 20, rating companies on their social, ethical and political record, their company ethos and the sustainability of their products. Good Energy was the only company to score 15.5 for green electricity and it was joint highest for gas with 15. “For green electricity tariffs, Good Energy comes out best in this report”, the magazine stated.

Earlier this year, we also won the Which? Switch customer satisfaction survey and were the only company to be awarded the top five-star rating for energy efficiency advice, something we’re particularly proud of.

Juliet Davenport, CEO and founder of Good Energy, said, “Ethical Consumer‘s comprehensive reports hold businesses accountable for their ethical and environmental record and offer positive choices for consumers who care about responsible business. We are delighted their report has found Good Energy offers the best green electricity tariff on the market.

We strongly believe that business can be a force for good, and our mission is to make an impact on climate change by making it easy for people to switch to green electricity.”

By being honest about who we are and what we do, as well as providing the best possible service at competitive prices, we want to pave the way for an increasingly environmentally and socially responsible industry. Who’s with us?
