Leaked Energy Efficiency Directive Proposal – CAN Europe Respond
Dona Petroula, Energy Savings Policy Coordinator at Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, has commented on a leaked draft of the European Commission’s Energy Efficiency Directive proposal.
She said: “Raising the target from a mere 27 to 30 percent is a step in the right direction, but still only a halfhearted effort. In the leaked draft the Commission stops short of proposing a higher 40% target, undermining its commitment to put energy efficiency first. Hopefully, in the final proposal the Commission will go for a 40% efficiency target. This could cut greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2030, putting us within reach of the Paris Agreement goals.
The EU met its 2020 energy efficiency target six years early, which proves without doubt that EU targets are out of touch with reality and that the 2030 efficiency target should definitely be increased. Energy efficiency is the best choice on all fronts and it is a no-brainer that the economy can thrive while we reduce our energy consumption.”
