Triodos expands renewable portfolio with potato packaging plant project

Triodos Renewables has agreed a deal with Greenvale, the UK’s leading supplier of fresh potatoes, to build a 1.5MW wind power project at Floods Ferry in Cambridgeshire.

The 110 metre turbine will be developed by Wind Direct, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The project will provide up to 60% of Greenvale’s potato packing facility’s electricity demand, and help the company meet its target of reducing its carbon emissions by 20% by 2015.

“The wind turbine will secure a reliable energy supply for our packing site, generate jobs within the region, and reduce our impact on the environment,” said Trevor Dear, operations director of Greenvale.

Matthew Clayton, managing director of Triodos Renewables, added, “The sustainable ethos of Greenvale has made our collaboration on this project a very positive experience.”

Triodos Renewables, a subsidiary of Triodos Bank’s investment arm with over 5,000 shareholders, now has 13 clean energy projects in its portfolio. In March, the firm acquired a 55% stake in a five-turbine Cambridgeshire wind farm.

“This is a great start to 2014 for our shareholders, building on a record breaking 2013 for both Triodos Renewables and UK renewables industry,” Clayton adds.

“Last year the UK’s fleet of renewable projects generated 14.8% of the nation’s power. With this project Triodos Renewables’ generating capacity has increased to 60MW.”
