Apple to boost forest protection and green energy in China

Tech giant Apple has announced new measures to increase responsible forest management in China and expand clean energy projects across its manufacturing facilities in the country.

Apple has partnered with the WWF to protect up to one million acres of responsibly managed working forests to supply fibre for pulp, paper and wood products.

This would allow the company to both use and protect forests’ resources, by ensuring these are not irresponsibly exploited.

Apple has also plans to increase renewable energy use in its manufacturing centres, offices and stores in China – where it created 3 million jobs so far. The company recently launched a massive solar project in the Sichuan Province.

Tim Cook, Apple’s chief said, “We’ve set an example by greening our data centres, retail stores and corporate offices, and we’re ready to start leading the way toward reducing carbon emissions from manufacturing.

“This won’t happen overnight—in fact it will take years—but it’s important work that has to happen, and Apple is in a unique position to take the initiative toward this ambitious goal. It is a responsibility we accept. We are excited to work with leaders in our supply chain who want to be on the cutting edge of China’s green transformation.”

Lo Sze Ping, CEO for WWF China added, “Apple’s support for this project and its environmental leadership show that protecting forests is not just good for society but important for business.

“Our hope is this will catalyse a new model of corporate leadership in promoting sustainable forest management and using paper resources more efficiently and responsibly around the world.”

Apple had been previously praised for its environmental and renewable energy initiatives, being identified as a business leader in tackling climate change.
