The Cambridge Business Improvement District (BID) has been presented a national Green Can Award. The Every Can Counts Green Can Awards recognise businesses and organisations that go above and beyond to improve their recycling efforts. Cambridge BID has been honoured with the award following its work with recycling programme provider Every Can Counts.

The team at Cambridge BID work to ensure visitors, locals and businesses enjoy a vibrant, safe and clean environment. Recycling points have now been introduced to over 40 high street retailers, and two shopping centres.

Philippa Artus, Marketing & Projects Executive for Cambridge BID, said:  “We’re proud of this award and what it means for Cambridge in terms of supporting a sustainable city centre.

“The shopping centres we work with in Cambridge alone have recycled thousands of cans over the last year, which is a fantastic achievement.

“We are committed to developing projects like this that will help to keep the city clean, reduce CO2 emissions and protect resources.”

The recycling pioneers have also started to advocate the Every Can Counts recycling programme with Cambridge City Council and the colleges in Cambridge University.

Every Can Counts is a partnership between the European and UK drinks can manufacturers, the aluminium recycling industry and leading drinks brands. It is supported by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP). It aims to enable and encourage more people to recycle the drinks cans they use outside their homes.

Jonathan Easthope, Brand Manager for Every Can Counts, added: “The Cambridge BID team should be extremely proud of all they have done to improve recycling rates in the city.

“The efforts of Cambridge BID has meant that thousands of cans that could otherwise have been sent to landfill sites are now being recycled and reused.

“We urge more local businesses to get involved and start working with the free to use Every Can Counts programme. Whether organisations are looking for help promoting existing recycling facilities, or for those looking to start a new recycling scheme from scratch, we’re here to help.”
