Mobilising an entire planet for Earth Day 2012
“Our planet, our home is being neglected. Climate change continues unabated. It seems there’s a new ecological disaster happening almost daily. This Earth Day it’s time to mobilize the planet from the ground up to send a message that the Earth won’t wait!”
The greeting of the Earth Day website lays down an emotive message and a key phrase: “The Earth won’t wait”. It is this mantra that will encourage more than one billion people to participate in this year’s Earth Day on April 22.
The 42nd anniversary of Earth Day fast approaches, as does RIO+20, and there is rising concern that world governments are failing to take sufficient steps to protect our blue and green planet. “The Earth Day 2012 campaign is designed to provide people with the opportunity to unite their voices in a call for a sustainable future and direct them towards quantifiable outcomes”.
Indeed, it is time to “Mobilize the Earth”.
Blue & Green Tomorrow firmly believes that a sustainable future is the only one we have. Through sustainable investment and the support of sustainable suppliers, we have the power to vote with our feet and advocate change.
Adding your pledge to A Billion Acts of Green is one way of taking part in the Earth Day initiative. And while some of the registered acts are only small, the grand total of 977,877,386 (at time of writing) is extremely impressive. It proves that there is a groundswell in awareness of the global issues we face today and must tackle for tomorrow.
The aim is to hit one billion acts of green ahead of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), which takes place in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012. Many of the acts make a pledge to change behaviour, for example, eating more local produce, cycling to work and cutting down on waste—changes that we should all be making wherever possible anyway.
Beyond promoting sustainable acts in the community, the Earth Day Network is collaborating with tcktcktck to promote “Renewable Energy for All”. Among other plans, it will call upon world leaders at Rio+20 to meet “global targets for 2020, or at the latest by 2030, of 30% energy use from renewables; 40% decrease in energy intensity”.
