Are you planning a major trip this summer? If you are serious about preserving the environment, you are probably committed to making sure your trip is as sustainable as possible.

Finding the right place to travel can seem overwhelming for eco-tourists. Fortunately, there are lots of places to consider.

Choosing the Best Green Destinations as an Eco-Tourist

Summer months are on the horizon and many people are gearing up for their dream vacation in 2019. Spring is the best season to make your vacation plans.  In 2017, an overwhelming 1.32 billion tourists traveled internationally and that figure is forecast to grow by three to four percent in 2019 according to UNWTO.

There are mixed feelings about this. Although it is good for the global economy, it is leaving a large carbon footprint. The New York Times published an article on the environmental hazards of international travel in one of their 2017 articles. This means tourists will need to travel more sustainably.

According to a survey conducted by AARP Travel, tourists are willing to spend more than $6,000 for their travel plans in the year 2019 alone. With Europe, the Caribbean, Asia, and Middle East regions topping the most sought-after destination for vacations. Surprisingly, demand for green tourism is higher than ever. This bodes well for the environment, as well as countries that have made a commitment to creating sustainable travel programs.

If you don’t have any idea where to go, but are lucky enough to have some money to spare then here are five sustainable travel destinations for your 2019 vacation.

Taiwan

If you are a fan of bubble tea, then that should be enough reason for you to travel to Taiwan this year. Bubble tea, milk tea or boba are tea-based drinks that were invented in Tainan and Taichung, Taiwan in 1980s. There is no better way to experience this drink than in its home country in Asia.

Taiwan also boast itself with hawking stores, making it a haven for those who live for the street food experience. Even though Taiwan may seem small in size, it manages to have 14 national parks wherein you can enjoy activities like rafting, hiking and biking. Few people have cars there, so you will be contributing to helping the environment.

There are plenty of great green vacation spots to check out there. You can find a list of 10 of them on Smithsonian Magazine.

Egypt

The home of Pharaohs, mummies, and pyramids, Egypt is still as mystic as ever making it a destination to be in 2019. Despite recent concerns about security, authorities are doing all they can to sweep away the trepidations, by beefing up security and alluring tourist with their recent findings and discoveries.

2019 is the best time to be in Egypt as it is less crowded, compare to 2020 when the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum will happen. This will surely draw the crowd to the country and may prevent you from enjoying the imposing beauty of known spots like Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, Valley of the Kings and the Red Sea.

Egypt is also doing a lot to improve sustainability. A young entrepreneur there recently started constructing green housing.

Sri Lanka

Located south of India, Sri Lanka is slowly but surely making a name in tourism due to the natural beauty this country possess. The natural richness of this country is beyond imagined.  Meaning many plants, around 23%, and flowering plants, about 23, can only be found here.

It’s location, being surrounded by the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, makes it’s a surfer’s paradise and other water related activities like fishing, deep diving, snorkeling, and jet skiing. These are all great green activities to try.

Ukraine

If you want to see magnificent art, imposing architecture and sumptuous food in Eastern Europe, then you need to head to Ukraine. After some negative news headlines in the past couple of years, Ukraine is been generally calm in recent years and is slowly opening and standing up as a traveler’s frontier in the region.

The capital city of Kiev is home to marvelous architecture, magnificent museums, and captivating street arts. If you are someone who likes going off the beaten path, combined with adrenaline junkie activities and best-hidden food experience then Ukraine can be your home for a week or two. These are also great green activities to check out.

Tahiti

Saying the country’s name alone will make you feel like you are teleported right at the side of the beach, listening to the waves of a calm sea and served with a refreshing relaxing drink. Tahiti, located in French Polynesia right in the middle of South Pacific Archipelago, is a destination to behold for its serene beauty, affordable price and apparent accessibility. If you want to follow the footsteps of Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Carrie Underwood, and the Kardashians then Tahiti should be written in your vacation list.
