Students from across the UK have won a competition from the Norstec Academy to take part in an offshore wind industry tour, after they were asked to write about what inspires them about the sector.

The winners will be given the opportunity to meet experts and learn more about all aspects of the wind industry from developers and operators to legal and finance professionals. During the first two weeks of July, the students will be able to engage with a diverse range of people that make the wind industry a success.

Partners of the Norstec Academy include the wind and marine trade body RenewableUK, manufacturing giants Siemens and Dong, and owners of much of Britain’s foreshore the Crown Estate. The academy aims to promote the offshore wind industry and provide valuable experience and career development opportunities for existing employees and students, and the competition is designed to further these aims.

One of the winners, Daniel Brown, from King’s College London, said, “Offshore wind inspires because people within the industry are showing themselves to be some of the most driven, passionate, and effective at addressing this global energy problem.”

Twenty students will take part in the tour and come from universities from around the UK, with two participants coming from the Netherlands and Germany.

Rachel Odams from Siemens, the chair of the Norstec communication group, said, “It was great to meet some of the winning students last night at the Works of Wind event. With backgrounds in public policy, law, engineering and geology, what immediately struck us all was the level of interest and motivation.

“The two-week industry tour will be hugely engaging and informative for everyone, both for students and the companies and organisations involved. The whole competition has revealed some really hidden talent. This is what the academy is all about – the future talent pipeline and the next generation of employees.”

Whilst reform and uncertainty has affected the UK renewables industry, the UK still ranks as the number one most attractive investment destination for offshore wind, according to EY’s Country Attractiveness Index.
