National Grid is seeking additional electricity supplies for winter after unexpected plant shutdowns have raised fears of potential shortages. The firm, which runs the supply network, said it was accelerating an emergency plan asking providers how much more electricity they could provide to fill a possible shortfall. BBC.

Halliburton, the American contractor that worked on BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig, has agreed to pay $1.1 billion to settle most of the lawsuits over its role in the Gulf of Mexico spill. The settlement is dwarfed by the still-spiralling fines BP faces over the disaster in 2010. Telegraph.
Propane made with renewable process for the first time
A gas which can power cars and heat homes has been made using a renewable process for the first time. Propane, which makes up the bulk component of liquefied natural gas, has previously only ever been produced from fossil fuels. Guardian.
