Consumer campaigning set to be discussed at Ethical Consumer conference

At this year’s Ethical Consumer Conference, to be held on September 26 at Amnesty International Human Rights Action Centre in London, speakers and delegates will discuss consumer campaigning.

The event will be split into three sections looking at the past, present and future of consumer campaigning for sustainability and social justice. Over the last 25 years the ethical market has seen huge growth, with fairtrade products moving into the mainstream, and the conference will explore how this trend will continue and broaden over the next 25 years.

Looking at past successes will be environmental NGOs, successful ethical businesses and Christabel Gurney, an anti-apartheid South Africa boycott campaigner.

The conference’s section on the present will feature a discussion panel on the big issues of our time from fast fashion and the disposable society to divestment and sanctions campaigns. Speakers on the panel include Professor Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University London’s Centre for Food Policy, John Hilary, executive director of War on Want, and Emily Kenway, founder of Amazon Anonymous.

This will be followed by a panel and group discussion on ethical and peer to peer finance, the future of ethical labelling, new technology campaign tools of the future and the future of the ethical market. Delegates will be joined by Bruce Davis, joint managing director of Abundance Generation and Laura Townshend, director of communication at 38 Degrees and representatives of Ethical Consumer.
