Schwarzenegger heads Sustainia project to ‘inspire change’

If his mildly successful eight year stint as Californian Governor wasn’t surprising enough, actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger is now fronting a movement called Sustainia – in which a sustainable future is visualised online.

If his mildly successful eight year stint as Californian Governor wasn’t surprising enough, actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger is now fronting a movement called Sustainia – in which a sustainable future is visualised online.

Schwarzenegger, who is perhaps most famous for starring as robotic assassin, The Terminator, is creating the initiative with EU commissioner for climate change, Connie Hedegaard.

Using technology and based on real-life developments, Sustainia paints an online vision of a more environmentally-conscious future to dispel the misconception that sustainable living is a lower quality of life.

Sustainia is our vision of what a sustainable world would look like and be like to live in”, reads the official guide, which was written by Scandinavian think-tank, Monday Morning.

The guide also says that “Sustainia is not a Utopia, or a distant dream. Sustainia is based on facts, solutions, and ready and available technologies.”

The initiative will be targeted at the Rio+20 conference in June, and was announced in Geneva, Switzerland, on Wednesday.

Schwarzenegger, a former Mr Universe, said, “Being a champion in body building, in movies or in politics, I learned that the key to success is people power – motivating and inspiring everyone to be a part of the solution, not just part of the problem.

The Sustainia initiative and the awards that recognize innovative people and technologies can help our campaign to make communities healthier, wealthier, and more sustainable for generations to come.”

Although it resembles an eco-version of The Sims, the idea behind the initiative is welcome.

Living more sustainably is the only way to tackle climate change, and it’s important that visionaries start to show us how we might achieve this into the future.

It’s through continued investment in innovative technological solutions that we can build a more sustainable tomorrow. You can contribute by thinking more carefully about where you want your money invested.
