Building a Better Environment with The Big Lego Swap at Hamleys, Glasgow This Weekend
There’s a lot of momentum building as youngsters get set for this weekend’s Big Lego Swap event at St. Enoch Centre in Glasgow.
Young Lego enthusiasts are being given the chance to unblock some fun and get their hands on different figures as part of Zero Waste Scotland’s forthcoming Pass it On Week celebrations.
The event is taking place at world famous toy store Hamleys on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th of March where kids can bring in their old Lego for swapping with others – helping to avoid waste by passing on toys rather than throwing them away.
Andrew Pankhurst from Zero Waste Scotland, said “This is a really fun event for kids to take part in, and at the same time learn the value of keeping toys in use for longer.
“Lego is one of the most popular children’s toys and never goes out of fashion. We want to encourage as many parents and kids into the store this weekend to really give the swap event a boost.
“By keeping materials such as toys and games in use for longer by swapping, sharing or passing on, we can vastly reduce our carbon footprint.
“If kids have toys they no longer play with, we should be encouraging them to pass them on so that other children can love and enjoy them. That’s a far better use of old toys than throwing them into landfill.”
Pass it on Week is just one of several projects run by Zero Waste Scotland all year round, designed to demonstrate the various positive – and often small – changes that people can make to their behaviour, which can have a hugely positive collective impact on the environment.
This year Pass it on Week is running from 5th to 13th of March.
Lego lovers can also visit St. Enoch Centre’s Brick Flicks exhibition for inspiration. Created by Lego enthusiast and artist, Warren Elsmore, Brick Flicks brings to life much-loved movies by recreating them in Lego and features everything from sci-fi and drama to action blockbusters. The exhibition runs until 18th April and showcases everything from family favourites Wayne’s World, Wizard of Oz and West Side Story to Tron and The Godfather.
Anne Ledgerwood, general manager of St. Enoch Centre, said “Lego is such an iconic toy for children and adults alike. We’d encourage all of the Lego lovers taking part in this weekend’s Lego Swap to explore our Brick Flicks exhibition. We’re sure that when Lego fans have seen Warren’s amazing work the last thing they’ll want to do is throw their blocks away.”
