Jeremy Leggett, Karl Harder and Mark Powell have all been confirmed as speakers for the Sustainable September’s Energy Debate taking place at Siemens Crystal in London on September 16. Tickets are available here.
The three leading names from the UK energy sector will debate either for or against the motion, “Shale gas and nuclear power will address carbon emissions in the immediate term, far more effectively than unproven renewables”. The speakers will be joined with one other soon-to-be-confirmed participant and the audience will be invited to vote before and after the debate to decide the winner.
Karl Harder, the co-founder and operations director at renewable energy crowdfunding platform Abundance Generation, will be arguing against the motion. He recently spoke to Blue & Green Tomorrow about how he was looking forward to opening up the debate in regards to our options for the future.
Jeremy Leggett will also be speaking against the motion and is the founder and non-executive chairman of solar businsess, Solarcentury. He also helped set up the charity SolarAid in 2006 and his latest book The Energy of Nations talks about the future of energy.
Speaking in favour of the motion is Mark Powell who leads the power and utilities practice at consulting firm AT Kearney. He is keen to ensure costs are considered as part of the sustainable energy debate.
Stephen Tindale, associate fellow at the Centre for European Reform and former executive director of Greenpeace, will moderate the debate.
The Sustainable Energy Debate takes place from 6-9pm on September 16 and is part of Blue & Green Tomorrow’s month-long sustainability event. Other events include tourism, retail and investment debates and an all day conference at Central Hall, Westminster on September 30.
