Arctic Deeply: An Innovative Resource On The Arctic’s Ecology & Economy
Arctic Deeply, a comprehensive new media platform created to focus on ecological, geopolitical and strategic issues shaping the Arctic, launches today.
The platform is produced through a landmark collaboration between News Deeply, an award-winning new media startup based in New York City, the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), an international affairs think tank, and OpenCanada, a Canadian news site on global affairs.
“We are delighted to be a partner in this exciting initiative,” said Rohinton Medhora, President of CIGI. “Arctic Deeply provides a unique space for CIGI’s substantive material on Arctic issues and, through its community of deeply interested stakeholders, maintains exposure to one of the most exciting regions and pressing challenges of our time.”
As the fourth platform designed and developed by News Deeply, Arctic Deeply will feature live news streams and extensive explanatory content on environmental change, indigenous peoples, geopolitics and security and commercial development.
News Deeply’s team of journalists and technologists is best known for its inaugural platform, Syria Deeply, which has provided focused coverage of the Syrian conflict since December 2012. The team’s second platform, Ebola Deeply, launched in 2014 as a real-time crisis monitor for the deadly outbreak; and the third platform, Water Deeply, launched in 2015 to cover California’s four-year drought.
Hannah Hoag, an award-winning journalist with more than a decade of experience reporting on environmental science, will serve as the managing editor of Arctic Deeply, based in Toronto.
“I’ve covered climate change issues for over a decade. I’ve seen and heard firsthand the impact that climate change is having on the landscape and the oceans. It’s already affecting people’s livelihoods,” said Hoag.
“The conversation has really moved into the mainstream, and Arctic Deeply is a great place to pull those strands together.”
Adding to Arctic Deeply’s impact is a new content collaboration with the Huffington Post, which will extend News Deeply’s reach to millions of readers.
“We are delighted to be bringing this new media model to serve Arctic communities and to the global readers striving to understand the high north,” said Lara Setrakian, News Deeply’s co-founder and CEO. “Partnering with CIGI and OpenCanada has amplified our impact, bringing a sophisticated policy perspective and powerful thought leadership to the project, while Huffington Post will help us bring insights from Arctic Deeply to the broader public.”
