Innovative Packaging Launched by Abel & Cole

Organic home delivery service Abel & Cole has developed the UK’s first fully compostable veg bag, which in addition to cutting down on packaging waste, keeps its carrots and leafy veg fresher than ever.

Made from bio-polyester, a synthetic material derived from corn starch, the exciting and innovative new bags are entirely biodegradable and can decompose within 6 to 8 weeks.

Will Robinson, Head of Production at Abel & Cole, said: “We’re always looking for new exciting innovations to share with our customers and are really thrilled with our new packaging which keeps our veg as fresh as possible while stopping condensation forming. From time to time, some of our carrots became dehydrated in our veg boxes as the cardboard can draw out the moisture in them and make them a bit bendy. We knew this wasn’t good enough so looked around for a solution which helped our carrots and was good for the environment.

“We worked with carbon neutral Finnish company Bioska to develop the new packaging and are delighted with the results. We’ve always focused on keeping packaging to a minimum, with returnable boxes and eco chill boxes made from sheep wool so to develop something which keeps our veg extra fresh and which can go into the compost heap is just amazing.”

Abel & Cole, part of family business William Jackson Food Group, introduced the bags to customers this week.
