Greener UK Respond To PM Brexit Speech
Greener UK have identified the importance of our EU relationship for the environment after Theresa May’s Brexit speech.
Following Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit speech today, Head of Greener UK Unit, Amy Mount said:
“We welcome the new level of clarity on the Brexit process that the Prime Minister has provided today, particularly her promise of full parliamentary scrutiny of any changes to the body of EU law once transposed to the UK through the ‘Great Repeal Bill’.
The future of our relationship and co-operation with the EU is critical to the continued health of the UK’s environment and people
“With a significant proportion of the UK’s environmental protections having been developed with the EU, the future of our relationship and co-operation with the EU is critical to the continued health of the UK’s environment and people.
“Yet, as the UK embarks on the new free trade agreements that Theresa May has announced today with the EU and new global partners, some of our environmental protections could be at risk, rolled back through the deal-making process.
“It is, therefore, deeply disappointing that the Prime Minister did not provide certainty on the future of our environmental standards and protections in today’s speech. It is critical that this certainty is provided swiftly to UK business, and to the 80 per cent of people who want our environmental protections to be maintained as we exit the EU.”
