The honest version of that answer is complicated, though, which is exactly why it deserves a proper look rather than a slogan.
The destination that sharpens the question is Raja Ampat, an archipelago of roughly 1,500 islands at the heart of the Coral Triangle. Raja Ampat holds more recorded coral and fish species than any comparable area on the planet. Raja Ampat is also one of the few major reef systems whose health has broadly held up, and in places improved, over the past two decades — a period in which the world lost 14% of its living coral between 2009 and 2018, according to the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network’s most comprehensive assessment. That resilience is no accident. Every visitor pays a marine park entry fee, and those funds contribute to patrol boats, ranger salaries, and management of a marine protected area network covering well over a million hectares. In 2010 the regency declared all of its waters a sanctuary for sharks and manta rays — the first of its kind in the Coral Triangle. Local communities retain traditional tenure over their reefs through a customary system called sasi, which allows villages to close areas to fishing, and tourism gives those closures an income stream that makes them affordable.
This is the part conservation economists find genuinely interesting. Before dive-based eco-tourism, a reef shark in these waters was worth its fins, once. Alive, photographed by a steady stream of divers over a lifespan of decades, the same animal is worth orders of magnitude more. Crucially, that value flows partly to the communities who decide the animal’s fate. So the honest verdict stops short of calling this trip green. The claim that survives scrutiny is narrower: if you are going to fly long-haul at all, and many people will, then a destination where your fees fund protection and your accommodation floats away afterward is among the most defensible forms sustainable travel can take. Fly rarely, stay longer, choose carefully — the familiar arithmetic of conscious travel applies here with unusual force.
If You Go: Sustainable Diving, Done Responsibly

A Reef That Pays Its Own Way
The uncomfortable truth of modern conservation is that beautiful places increasingly survive only because they are worth something to somebody. Raja Ampat is one of the clearest examples anywhere of that logic working in the ocean’s favor: a reef system whose visitors arrive by small boat, pay for its protection, and leave the coastline exactly as they found it.
Whether that justifies your flight is a calculation every traveler has to run alone. Some will decide no long-haul flight clears the bar; that is a coherent position, honestly held. But if the reef’s best defense is being seen, then the greenest seat in the house might genuinely be a bunk on a boat — and liveaboard diving, done the Raja Ampat way, is about as close as sustainable diving gets to paying its own way.
