The trade association of the combined heat and power and district heating and cooling industry has launched a competition asking photographers “to showcase the hidden nature of heat”.

The Combined Heat and Power Association (CHPA) is asking for any photos featuring decentralised heat or combined heat and power equipment from anywhere in the UK.

It says it is looking for “dynamic and vivid images that bring to life what is sometimes quite a dull subject area”, and images “that capture the community feel of an energy installation”.

A prize of £1,000 is on offer to the winner, with a runner up prize of £250 also available.

The competition will close on September 30, ahead of the CHPA’s annual conference, Heat 14, which will take place on November 5.

There are currently around 2,000 combined heat and power units, 1,765 district heating schemes connecting 200,000 properties and 50,000 biomass boilers, solar thermal panels and heat pumps in use in homes and small businesses across the UK.

To give prospective entrants some inspiration, the CHPA has also organised two site visits – to E.ON’s Myatts Field and Pimlico District Heating Undertaking, both in London – on June 18 and July 2 respectively.

Supporters of combined heat and power systems argue that they provide unique energy efficiency benefits, reducing fuel or energy consumption without compromising the energy supply to consumers.

Entrants are asked to send their photos to claire.wych@chpa.co.uk.
