Ecology Building Society among those supporting Sustainable September
The Ecology Building Society is one of the organisations supporting Blue & Green Tomorrow’s Sustainable September, a month long celebration of sustainability that will see visionaries from the tourism, energy, retail and investment sectors gather to share their views.
The Ecology Building Society began trading in 1981 after a Yorkshire solicitor companied of the difficult he had in finding a mortgage for a property needing extensive renovation at a Green Party conference. In response someone asked, ‘Why don’t we start a building society?’ and it grew from there.
Over the last three decades Ecology’s assets have grown, surpassing the £100 million mark in 2011. However, it asserts that whilst many things have changed since 1881 its mission and principles to help build a greener society haven’t.
It argues that its mutual model means it can completely focus on its mission rather than generating profits for shareholders, as well as giving members an opportunity to say how Ecology is run. The mortgages offered by Ecology support and promote building practices that respect the environment and sustainable, low impact communities.
Ecology’s ethos makes it a perfect supporter for Sustainable September, when over the course of the month four Oxford-style debates and an all day sustainability conference will take place in London.
