Energy term of the day: renewables obligation
The renewables obligation (RO) ensures that big energy firms are doing their bit in the fight against climate change.
Initially introduced in 2002, RO replaced the non-fossil fuel obligation, which was launched in 1990. The initial expectation at launch was that energy companies would source at least 3% of their energy from a renewable energy source. This figure for 2013/14 is now 20.6%.
