2013 sustainable tour operator of the year: TUI Nederland
Netherlands-based tour operator TUI Nederland is Blue & Green Tomorrow’s 2013 sustainable tour operator of the year.
The Dutch firm is one of the most significant players in the European travel industry, and has strived to embed sustainability as a core aspect of its tourism operations. Its long-term commitment to sustainable tourism is critical in ensuring supply chains and holiday destinations are truly sustainable, and in good condition for future generations to appreciate.
In November 2012, TUI Nederland launched its sustainable tourism strategy for the next three years. The plan included specific sustainability pillars, such as destinations, carbon footprint, customers and colleagues. Idealised visions for 2015 relate to integrating sustainable tourism processes and practices throughout the organisation.
Investment in the development of a certified sustainability label and environmental management standards. Consequently, leading to growing responsible supply chains, environmentally-friendly transport and activities and sustainable holiday destinations. The introduction of the TUI Care Foundation and the anticipated investment of €500,000 will maintain the sustainable development of holiday destinations.
Reducing its carbon footprint for both airlines and offices is a major priority for TUI Nederland. An airline focused strategy for a sustainable biofuel will be explored in co-operation with business partners. TUI Nederland’s ambition is to reduce its headquarters’ carbon footprint by 20% between 2011 and 2015, equivalent to 1,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Those customers who hold an interest in responsible tourism will be offered advice on sustainable tourism issues, specifically destination travel implications. Colleagues of the TUI Nederland brand will be presented with the opportunity for sustainable tourism training from renowned tourism education establishments.
At the 10th annual World Responsible Tourism Awards this year, TUI Nederland was awarded the coveted overall winner title. The organisation was commended for its work addressing the issues of child protection and the sex tourism trade of children in Brazil.
