Americans are more concerned about environmentalism than ever. They are looking for new ways to make their homes more eco-friendly.

Even the National Association of Realtors is pushing for homes to be eco-friendly. They point out that the average home uses around 90 million Btu of energy each year. Fortunately, there are a number of ways that we can reduce that figure.

Taking Simple Steps Can Make Your Home Eco-friendly

You’re concerned about how we are destroying our environment at an alarming rate, and want to do something about it in your own small way. I commend you for thinking about how you can save our environment.

In this article, I will show you ways you can make your home more eco-friendly. The simple ways I recommend will not only help you do your bit in environmental protection but some will also save you money.

Let’s get into it!

1. Use LED lights to light up your house.

According to research by the U.S Department of Energy, light-emitting Diodes (LED) use less energy than regular bulbs.  Energy used can be up to 75% less. This not only lowers your power bill but the less energy you consume also saves the environment.

2. Make your home a non-plastic bottle area.

A plastic bottle can take close to 1,000 years to biodegrade during which time they will containment soil and groundwater with dangerous chemicals. That’s why they are a big risk to our environment. Millions of plastic bottles in the ocean, for example, are leading to the fast death of our marine life.

Do away with the plastic bottles and instead opt for reusable bottles. This way you’ll know with each sip you take you’re saving the environment.

3. Fix the leaking tap ASAP.

This may seem like a small thing but a leaking faucet left for a whole day is equivalent to five gallons of water wasted. Your aim is to conserve our resources, so call the plumber immediately to you notice a leak in your home.

4. Take shorter showers.

The average American uses 25,300 gallons of water showering. I know a hot shower after a hard day at work is so relaxing. However, if you’re looking to be eco-friendly limit your shower time to five minutes max. By doing this you can save close to 1,000 gallons of water monthly.

5. Unplug electronics when not in use.

One of the easiest ways to save energy in your home is to remove every charger, light and so from the power outlet when you are not using them. This is a very simple thing to do but a lot of people don’t do it and instead leave their electronics continuously plugged to the power source. Take time to unplug your electronics when leaving the house and you’ll be saving the planet.

6. Hang your clothes out to dry.

This may be an old school way to dry your clothes but it can help you save energy and money. A dryer uses a lot of energy actually more than a fridge, dishwasher, TV, etc. so ditch it and let the sun dry your clothes.  When looking for a place to rent one of the things you can ask is if they have clothes drying lines. For example, when you do an online search you can find lots of rooms for rent in Berlin which give tenants the option to use a dryer or hang out their clothes to dry.

7. Always turn off the light.

You may be in the habit of going into a room turning on the light and forgetting to put it off when you leave. Train yourself to always switch off the light when you leave a room. According to research if everybody put off the lights when not in use the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by power stations could significantly reduce.

8. Have plants in your house.

Taking care of a plant may be challenging. But if you truly want to help in protecting your environment this act will go a long way in doing so. The University of Technology Australia, scientists did a research which showed potted plants can make your indoor air cleaner. This is because they remove toxins like benzene.

Helping to protect the environment doesn’t have to be a chore. As you can see from this article you can do simple things that will make your home more eco-friendly. Are you going to start implementing these simple things today? Please do.
