GE Aviation Wales slashes bills by £1.4m through energy efficiency
GE Aviation Wales has cut its energy bills by £1.4m by investing just £200,000 into energy efficiency schemes.
The aircraft engine maintenance specialists, based in Nantgarw, near Cardiff, have reaped the benefits of energy saving with the help of the sustainability advisory organisation Carbon Trust Wales.
Investing £200,000 in 2006, the firm has since profited from savings worth seven times more than its outlay, while reducing energy consumption.
“By encouraging employee participation our sustainability ethos has filtered throughout the company”, said Hywel Evans, maintenance manager at GE Aviation Wales.
“This way all of our employees have an increased awareness of energy consumption and are taking responsibility for their energy use which in turn is making savings for the company. We are really pleased to have made such significant savings.”
Lucy Hoggins, account manager at Carbon Trust Wales, added, “Businesses can learn a lot by looking at what other companies are doing to improve their energy efficiency and can often be incentivised by seeing the savings they are making.
“GE Aviation Wales’s £1.4m saving proves that energy efficiency is worth investing in.”
According to a survey published in May, almost three-quarters (73%) of UK business leaders have no idea what their company spends on electricity.
Whilst over seven in 10 of the 250 respondents said the government should be doing more to encourage energy efficiency within the business community, only a quarter said that they make expenditure on energy a regular agenda item at management meetings.
