German tourist board recognised with international sustainability award

The German National Tourist Board (DZT) has become the first national tourist board to be presented with the prestigious Green Globe Certificate – a globally recognised standard for sustainable tourism management.

Green Globe is the worldwide certification for sustainable tourism and travel. To achieve this standard, organisations must meet rigorous sustainability criteria based on their overall travel and tourism performance.

The assessment criteria takes the form of sustainability and resource management, contribution to social and community development, cultural heritage preservation and environmental conservation.

Germany has long been regarded as one of the global leaders in sustainable tourism and green travel. Sustainable travel continues to be reflected as a crucial component of the tourist authorities’ strategic activities.

German National Tourist Board CEO Petra Hedorfer said, “We have been promoting sustainability as a core marketing theme for travel destination Germany for many years and regard it as one of the principle responsibilities of our organisation.”

As a destination Germany has emphasised a consistent approach to supporting future sustainable travel. It has been able to demonstrate key achievements in the field of green meetings and its commitment to creating accessible travel.
