Museum of London to host Sustainable September Tourism Debate
The Museum of London is to host Blue & Green Tomorrow’s Sustainable September Tourism Debate, bringing together leaders from the industry for a competitive discussion about the future of travel.
The Oxford-style debate, which will take place on September 3, at 6-9pm, will put forward the motion “Growth in tourism is undesirable: it is rarely economically, socially or environmentally ‘good’.”
Two sides will put forward their cases for or against the motion, with success decided by an audience vote.
Manda Brookman, director of CoaST: One Planet Tourism network, an independent social enterprise leading sustainable tourism in the Cornwall area and beyond, has been announced as the first confirmed speaker. Three more will shortly follow.
The museum, which is one of London’s younger institutions having opened in 1976, is located on London Wall, close to the Barbican Centre. It is only a short walk from the St Paul’s, Barbican and Moorgate underground stations.
After a £20 million redevelopment, completed in 2010, the museum has been cemented as one of London’s most popular tourist attractions and venues.
The museum takes visitors through the social history of the capital, from prehistoric times through to the modern day, through the eras of the Romans, the Great Fire of 1666, the Victorians, the swinging Sixties and the punks.
The Sustainable Tourism Debate will be the opening event of Blue & Green Tomorrow’s Sustainable September. It will be followed by three further evening debates on retail, energy and investment and an all-day sustainability conference on September 30 at Westminster’s Central Hall.
