Almost 25 years to the day since Tim Berners-Lee invented the internet, the UK government announced that it would be investing an extra £45m into the development of the so-called Internet of Things.

This generally refers to networks of physical objects – from kettles to pacemakers – that are  equipped with sensors for data gathering, data monitoring, decision-making and process optimisation.

David Cameron, the prime minister, said that research and development in such technology could see the UK lead a new “industrial revolution“.

The below infographic, by the team at WishCoUk Ltd, looks at the past, present and future of the Internet of Things.
