Video: get familiar with climate science and don’t be a ‘climate pleb’
How much do you know about climate change? How much time do you spend thinking about the long-term, global implications of the continued use of fossil fuels?
Ask the majority of people the above two questions and their answers will likely be “not much” to both. The scientists who study this subject tell us climate change’s impacts could be huge. So why the apathy?
The video below hears from a man who has just finished his PhD in climate change. The narrator points out that he has spent seven years studying climate science and policy full-time (approximately 40 hours a week, 48 weeks a year for seven years, so 13,440 hours in total). He is an expert and we should listen to people like him, but do we?
The narrator links the relative lack of action on climate change to the wider population’s lethargy – the “climate plebs“, as she describes them. She adds, “Without mass engagement, we risk the whole group of generally really nice people, doing something unspeakably horrific to people living only a few decades after them.”
The question is, are you a climate pleb? And if so, what are you going to do about it?
