New Book – ‘India’s Climate Change Identity’

Professor Aled Jones, Director of the Global Sustainability Institute at Anglia Ruskin University and former Anglia Ruskin PhD student, Dr Samir Saran, have recently written a new book, entitled ‘India’s Climate Change Identity’.

The book, published by Palgrave Macmillan, presents a new and innovative approach to understanding the dynamics of international climate change negotiations using India, the second most populous country in the world, as a focal point.

Based on the PhD thesis of Dr Saran, who studied at Anglia Ruskin’s Global Sustainability Institute, the book considers India’s negotiating position at multilateral climate negotiations and its focus on the notion of ‘equity’ and ‘climate justice’.

India’s Climate Change Identity delves into the media’s representation of India as a rural economy, a rising industrial power, a developing country, a member of the five emerging economies (BRICS), and a country with severe resource security issues. The book examines the diverse, and at time divergent, narratives on India’s national identity in the context of policy formulation.

Professor Jones said: “We are really pleased that the GSI’s first student to submit his PhD thesis has been able to publish his research in this book. The role India plays in international climate negotiations is of course key and this book explores how India approaches these discussions.
