AMR stands for automatic meter reading, and is the term given to the process by which gas, electricity and water meters can be read remotely by providers.

Meters capable of allowing this system to operate use a number of mobile technologies, including satellite and radio frequencies. The data collected is then centralised on a database for billing and analysis.
