9 Natural Mosquito Bite Relief Tricks
Mosquito bites – the “gift” that keeps on giving. Only a superhuman can resist the urge to scratch that annoying, itchy bump left behind by these pesky little insects. For the rest of us, these natural mosquito bite relief tricks are safe and effective ways to keep your fingernails from attacking the raised bump on your skin.
Baking Soda and Water
The alkaline nature of baking soda neutralizes the pH of your skin to provide relief from mosquito bites. Make a thick paste of baking soda and water, and apply it to the area that’s been bitten. It won’t be long before you feel the itching and swelling decrease.
Onion
You’re already crying from the intense itching. It won’t hurt to add another tear-producing element to the equation. Slice an onion and place it on the mosquito bite until the itch goes away.
Toothpaste
Toothpaste is best applied if you don’t have to be anywhere for a while, since you’re supposed to let the toothpaste dry and leave it on the mosquito bite until it’s no longer effective.
Lemon Slice
Lemons have natural anti-inflammatory and anesthetic properties. You can squeeze the juice of a lemon directly onto the mosquito bite, or rub the peel across the affected area. Also, the lemon juice acts as a cleaning agent, keeping your wound from becoming infected from any dirt under your scratching fingernails.
Lime juice works just as well.
Lavender Essential Oil and Tea Tree Oil
Dilute lavender essential oil or tea tree oil with water, and apply to the mosquito bite. It should relieve the itch quickly. Lavender is also effective at repelling mosquitoes.
Garlic
Be careful with this mosquito bite remedy as it can really sting at first. However, it provides fast relief of the itch once the stinging goes away. Leave it on for a few minutes before washing it off.
Bug Zapping Light
Bug zapping lights have been around for years. There is a reason for this. They are very effective. We checked with our friends at Cloodjo and they confirmed that many of the popular mosquito killers on the market are bug zapping lights.
Vinegar
A small amount of vinegar (organic apple cider vinegar is best) applied directly to the bump can provide relief. If you have several mosquito bites, a hot bath filled with water and 2-1/2 cups of vinegar can soothe your itchy body.
Scotch Tape
Put scotch tape over your mosquito bite to remind you not to scratch, especially at night when your defenses will be down while you sleep.
Ice
Some good old fashioned cold therapy can help provide immediate relief for mosquito bites as well as bites from many other bugs and insects. Ice is effective because it numbs the nerves that conduct itching. Some people think something hot can have the same effect as ice, but after you stop applying the hot therapy, you’ll get hit with a release of histamine that will make the itching even worse than before.
The best thing you can do is try to control pests such as mosquitoes in the first place, but if you do get bit, these natural mosquito bite relief tips should do the trick.
