Next Stop, Paris Agreement: Worldwide Deal to Regulate Aviation Pollution
There are less than three days to go to reach a negotiation at the UN International Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to adopt a global deal to control emissions regarding international aviation, the fastest source of carbon pollution worldwide.
The International Coalition on Sustainable Aviation (ICSA) – the only official civil society observer at the UN’s ICAO proceedings – will hold a press call at 10:00am EST on 5 October to share the latest Montreal developments.
Aviation negotiations occur the same week that the landmark Paris Agreement is expected to enter into force. In one of the fastest ever “entry into force” timelines for a comprehensive multilateral treaty, nearly all the world’s nations came together to act on climate. The Montreal moment to regulate aviation emissions, a top ten global polluter, presents an opportunity for countries to demonstrate their sincerity and political intent to tackle climate change on all fronts.
With the Paris Agreement days away from taking effect, all eyes are now on Montreal. ICSA stresses that politics should not further compromise the ambition of this aviation climate agreement as negotiations wind to a close. Key ICSA experts on the ground in Montreal will discuss the current state of the agreement, provide insight on where key players stand and signal what to expect when the Assembly closes on Friday, 7 October.
