Three Creative Ways to Spread the Word About Green Living
More and more people are hopping on the green bandwagon; however, selling others on a more organic lifestyle is much easier said than done. After all, there’s a lot of resistance and resentment toward green living from those who are either skeptical of environmental issues or simply feel that the lifestyle is too expensive.
Like it or not, the responsibility to educate the public on the benefits of green living is on our shoulders.
But how can we spread the word in a positive manner, not coming off as preachy or pushy?
Instead of coming up with a sales pitch to encourage others to go green, consider telling your story as a means of educating others. For example, you could start a personal blog that generates buzz or conduct an outreach campaign in your local community to get others interested in topics surrounding green living.
Instead of just telling people to “go green,” consider the following topics for your blog or conversations with environmental newbies to help encourage others to adopt a happier, healthier lifestyle.
Explain Why You Went Green
Simply put, draw on what inspired you to initially take the leap into green living. Maybe it was your rising electric bill. Perhaps a documentary or case-study opened your eyes and made you realize that you needed to do your part in reducing your environmental blueprint.
Nobody wants to hear a a nagging laundry list of statistics: instead, get “real” with your audience and tug at their heartstrings.
At the same time, you should try to focus on the positives. Don’t start off by telling people that they’re destroying the environment with their current lifestyle, but rather they have the potential to transform the way that they live and see the world by making some relatively simple changes at home.
Talk About the Health Benefits
When someone asks you the specific benefits of going green, you should have some answers in your back pocket. For starters, you can discuss the health benefits of a green home including:
- Cleaner air and reduced risk for respiratory problems
- Less exposure to harmful chemicals in cleaning products and home materials
- Decreased presence of mold in the home: in other words, an overall cleaner living space
Again, focus on the positives and health benefits instead of fear-mongering about health risks.
Tell Them How Going Green Helps You Save
Considering that everyone wants to keep more money in their pocket, discussing the cost-saving benefits of green living is a no-brainer. From a lower energy bill to spending less on everyday household cleaners alone, green living can result in hundreds of dollars saved in no time flat. Green living often has a snowball effect for those who adopt the lifestyle: the closer you grow with nature, the more likely you are to boast a simpler budget that cuts out unnecessary expenses.
Green living shouldn’t be a “hard sell,” but rather an opportunity for others to change their lives for the better. If you’re looking to inspire others to adopt the green lifestyle, focus on the positives and strive to make an emotional connection with your audience as you spread the word.
