Good Energy, the UK’s only 100% renewable electricity supplier, is funding a PhD course in renewable energy at Birkbeck, University of London.
Over the course of a year starting in October, students will use research, fieldwork and industry knowledge to weigh up the consequences of not investing in clean energy technologies in the next 40 years.
This follows a World Future Council study from last month that claimed not using renewables was costing future generations some $9 billion a day.
Birkbeck, which boasts energy secretary Ed Davey, renowned environmentalist James Lovelock and adventurer-cum-television presenter Bear Grylls among its notable alumni, is ranked in the top 200 universities in the world.
“We’re hugely excited to be working with Birkbeck in supporting this studentship”, said Good Energy founder and CEO Juliet Davenport, who studied a master’s in economics at the college in the early ‘90s.
“Good Energy strives to lead the way in thinking around the energy challenges we face, both now and in the future. In looking at those challenges in a new way, we hope that we will all be better placed to provide the solutions needed to meet them.”
The application process is already underway, with the closing date set at March 1. Good Energy is fully funding the course, including tuition fees and research costs.
The collaboration follows a Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) survey from earlier this week that found 79% of people in UK were in favour of clean energy.
