Sustainable September to ask ‘is the future growth of tourism ‘desirable’?’

Published

on

Four leading industry figures will come together to debate the future of tourism for the Sustainable September Tourism Debate, in Blue & Green Tomorrow’s month-long celebration of sustainability. Tickets are available here.

Martin Brackenbury, director of luxury holiday company Classic Collection, and VisitBritain’s Patricia Yates will both argue against the motion that “growth in tourism is undesirable: it is rarely economically, socially or environmentally ‘good’.”

Mark Watson, executive director of Tourism Concern, and Manda Brookman, director of CoaST: One Planet Tourism network in Cornwall will both argue for the motion.

Stephen Farrant, director of International Tourism Partnership, will moderate the debate.

Each side will deliver a seven-minute opening statement, followed by a two-minute rebuttal to the opposition’s argument and questions from the audience. The winner will be decided by an audience vote.

The event will run from 6-9pm on September 3 and will take place at the Museum of London, close to the Barbican Centre.

The event will be supported by The Travel Foundation, VisitEngland, Abta and Aito. The Travel Trade Gazette, the UK’s leading publication for travel agents and the travel and tourism industry, will act as a media partner.

The Sustainable Tourism Debate will be the opening event of Blue & Green Tomorrow’s Sustainable September. It will be followed by three further evening debates on retail, energy and investment and an all-day sustainability conference on September 30 at Westminster’s Central Hall.
