Renewables firm Good Energy to accept Bristol Pound

Good Energy, which provides 100% renewable power, has become the world’s first energy company to accept a local currency – the Bristol Pound – for its energy bills.

The Bristol Pound (£B) is the UK’s first city-wide local currency, aimed at supporting the local economy. The currency is accepted in hundreds of business in Bristol and on public transport.

Good Energy, a 100% renewable electricity company, has announced during the Bristol’s Big Green Week that it will now allow its customers in the city to pay energy bills with their local currency.

Good Energy CEO and founder Juliet Davenport said, “We believe the future of energy is homegrown, sustainable generation which benefits communities and the planet. We’re incredibly excited to be leading the way by inviting our customers in Bristol to support green energy and their local economy at the same time.”

It is hoped that the move will make other energy firms follow suit. Good Energy staff will also have the chance to receive their wage in £B, while the company plans to use the money to pay its suppliers in the area.

Mayor of Bristol George Ferguson commented, “Bristol Pound is a tangible demonstration of the way Bristol does things differently, and it’s gone from strength to strength since it was first introduced.

“I’m delighted to hear that Good Energy now accepts our very own local currency – along with over 800 Bristol businesses, large and small, which is excellent news for the local circular economy.”

Local currencies, such as the £B, are conceived to encourage people to spend money in local business and create a stronger sense of community. They also help the environment as they support local food and products, which have a smaller carbon footprint.
