ClientEarth Call for Diesel Pollution Clean Up
New research has suggested that pollution caused by diesel powered cars and vans gets worse when it’s cold outside. The reports state that when the temperature is below 18 degrees Celsius the amount of pollution produced by diesel vehicles rises. ClientEarth says random vehicle testing could help tackle the pollution problem.
ClientEarth spokesperson Simon Alcock said: “This research shows that millions of vehicles could be driving around for most of the year with their pollution controls partly turned off. The UK authorities have done nothing to challenge the car manufacturers who are producing the vehicles that cause this problem and they have let manufacturers sell cars which spew out levels of pollution way above what they officially claim.
“We need a national network of clean air zones with random testing of vehicles and consumer labelling based on real world, independent tests. This will help us get the dirtiest diesel vehicles off our streets.”
