Ethical retailer of the week: WeWOOD

WeWOOD is an ethical firm producing watches from wood scraps, with an innovative design and eco-friendly features.

The company was set up in 2010, with the first watch designed in Florence, Italy. It then moved to Los Angeles and begun a partnership with two organisations, American Forests and Trees For The Future.

WeWOOD offers a wide range of sustainable watches, which come in various shapes, sizes and colours. The company recently updates its design and now uses state-of-the-art Miyota movements for its products. Wood watches have become very popular among celebrities as well.

WeWood uses natural wood, which has not been treated chemically and is splash-proof. Wood watches contain only minimal metal parts.

The firm has the ambitious goal of “restoring Mother Nature”, as it plants a tree for every watch sold. In its first three months of business, WeWOOD planted 5,000 trees and has currently reached the threshold of 300,000 trees. However, it aims to do more and has a goal of one million trees set for 2020.

The reforestation process has going on in various countries, including Argentina, Peru, Malaysia, Italy, America, Haiti, Senegal and Kenya, among others.

The company sources its wood from the five continents, but also in a sustainable and responsible way, as most of the materials used are scrap. Among the woods used are African Blackwood, Vera wood, maple and teak wood.
