A report by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) last month uncovered some shocking statistics into global food waste, claiming that between 30-50% of food produced “never reaches a human stomach”.
For Tristram Stuart, British author and campaigner, this news wasn’t new. He has spent the bulk of his career spreading the word about, as he calls it, “the global food waste scandal”.
In a TED talk from last year, Stuart – who organises the Feeding the 5000 campaign – spoke in depth about his experiences with food waste, and what people can do to cut it out of their lives.
He says, “We, the people, do have the power to stop [the] tragic waste of resources if we regard it as socially unacceptable to waste food.”
His short talk ought to inspire you to effect change in your lifestyles, and perhaps think twice about throwing away food that could in fact be eaten.
