FOE React To London Taxi Protest Over Air Pollution
Friends of the Earth have responded to the taxi drivers protests at Whitehall in central London today over traffic and air pollution, with campaigner Sophie Neuburg releasing the following statements.
“Taxi drivers are right to be concerned about air pollution. London’s air is filthy and cabbies, spending all day on our congested roads, suffer some of the worst effects of toxic pollution.
Sadiq Khan must extend the proposed Ultra Low Emissions Zone across the whole of London
“The Mayor has proposed policies which will go some way to cleaning up our air but they are not enough. Sadiq Khan must extend the proposed Ultra Low Emissions Zone across the whole of London, and create a plan for phasing-out diesel vehicles from our roads altogether.
“The Mayor must also cut the vehicles on our roads by investing in safe cycling, walking and public transport, and prevent new road building from adding to our traffic woes. This will reduce congestion and air pollution – and ultimately save lives.”
